Here’s the abc’s, definitions of the essential  niche marketing and passive income terms.

404 Not Found Error – an error message when a user visits a link and the page can no be found.

301 Moved Permanently – an error message when a user is visiting a web page that tells them the page has been moved permanently.

A

Above the Fold – the portion of the screen visible when a web page is first visited. It is important to have pertinent information here.

Action – the “act” of doing something. In the case of internet marketing taking action is doing the things that will get you site visitors and money.

Adwords – Google advertising network where you pay to advertise on websites.

AdSense – Google’s contextual advertising program for web owners to make money by placing ads on their website and posts through text ads, text links, mobile links and feeds.

Advertising Network – a company that connects websites that want to host ads with websites that want to advertise.

Ad Clicks – the number of clicks that an advertisement has received.

Ad Groups – a series or group of ads within an advertising campaign.

Ad Views – also known as impressions or the number of times an ad is viewed by a visitor.

Affiliate Marketing – a program that allows merchants to sell products by offering a system that lets other websites sell and promote for a commission or payment.

Alexa - search service index that ranks and rates site traffic and growth.

Algorithm - the formula that a search engine applies to rank and rate pages and websites.

Alt Tag – an attribute added to an image to make it readable by both search engines and the seeing impaired.

Amazon Associates – part of the huge Amazon network of merchandise sites this is a huge affiliate program specializing in books and consumer products.

Analytics - is programming that allows you to review or “analyze” the stats of your website such as traffic, location of visitor, keyword and various data.

Anchor Text – text a user clicks for a link to take them to another web page.

Application Program Interface (API) – the software that lets you communicate with another application used to integrate widgets, tools and various dynamic applications on websites.

Arbitrage - an opportunity to buy advertising on one site and sell it on another at a higher price.

Article Directory – a database of user submitted articles.

Article Marketing -  a method of submitting articles to directories to send traffic to your website.

Article Submitter -  a program that helps you submit articles to directories.

Authority - the strength of a web page or website based on the quality of content, links, age, relevancy & traffic.

Authority Site – a website that offers expertise on a specific topic as proven by the quality, traffic and size.

Automation -  the process of letting software or another party do an activity for you.

Autoresponder - a program that automatically answers and sends emails.

Avatar - a digital image or graphic used to represent you on a community or web presence.

B

Back link – a web link connecting and coming from another page or website.

Bait and Switch – a marketing technique where you get a person to visit your site by making it look like they are going to get certain information and then providing them with something different, often a sales pitch.

Bandwidth - how much information can be sent through an internet connection.

Banner - a graphical image linking to an advertiser’s website.

Beta - a term used to define that something, such as a website is in test mode while it is being changed or created.

Bitmap - a common format of image files.

Black Hat – a deceptive technique that doesn’t follow the guideline’s of search engines to gain traffic to a site. Any unethical form of search engine optimization. These methods and the search engine guidelines can change frequently.

Blog - or web log is a journal, but has now turned into a robust web platform for sharing information and content.

Blog Carnival – an event where multiple blogs get together and talk about a specific topic by publishing scheduled articles shared between the group and using the power of the many sites involved to gain traffic and interest.

Blogger - the blog platform owned by Google. Also a term for a person who writes a blog.

Blogroll - list of links to other websites, usually related in topic but sometimes they are a variety of supporting sites.

Blueprint - a web marketing blueprint is a formula, method or series of steps to build something. It’s a plan devised to be followed in order to create a “copy” of a process.

Bookmarking - a method of saving the favorite websites that you visit in order to reference them later.

Bounce Rate – the percentages of entrances to a website that result in leaving without visiting another page.

Branding - creating a name, design or image that is uniform so people will recognize the term on site and understand what is being offered.

Broad Match – a match of selected keywords in any order.

Broken Link -  a link that returns a 404 error message because the page cannot be found.

Browser - an application used to view information from the internet.

Browser Cache – saved browser information on web pages that have been visited.

Cannonical URL – the single most authoritative version of a URL. It demonstrates how your url is shown as a web address. The standard versions are:

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) – is a method of adding standard styles to a web page by creating one sheet that provides the format for all pages.

Classified - a type of site where users can advertise items or services

Click - the act of visiting a link by pressing the button on the mouse or keyboard.

ClickBank - large affiliate network specializing in selling info or electronic products.

Click-Through-Rate (CTR) – the number of times a visitor clicks on an ad or area of the page versus the number of times the page is visited.

Client - a program or application used to access information such as a web client or email client.

Cloaking - the act of hiding information from a user while linking, sometimes to make it easier to understand and sometimes to deceive.

Coaching - a method of training, instructing or teaching a person how to do something.

Code - anything written in a computer language to create an instruction to do something.

Comments - a method to leave feedback on a website

Commission Junction – A large affiliate network specializing in products.

Community - an area such as a forum or social media group where people can get together to discuss similar interests.

Content - any textual, audio or visual information provided on a website.

Content Management System – a platform that facilitates the organizing of content on a website.

Content Network (same as advertising network) – a company that connects websites that want to host ads with websites that want to advertise.

Contextual Advertising – a program such as Google AdSense that generates ads based on the text in a website.

Conversion - the act of reaching a desired goal. Typical conversions in web marketing include product sale,  ad click,  email capture,  survey completion, feedback, comment, or feed subscription.

Conversion Rate – the percentage of clicks that generate a conversion.

Cookie - a file on your computer that records  and tracks information about the users activity.

Copyright - the legal rights to publish and reproduce any work or represent a name.

Copyscape -  site that checks to see if your webcopy or content is original to reduce plagarism.

Cost Per Action (CPA) – form of advertisement that is dependent on payment if the action was taken.

Cost Per Click (CPC) – form of advertisement where payment is made if a click is made.

Cost Per Lead (CPL) – form of advertisement where payment is made for every lead or person delivered to the site.

cPanel - the access area to manage your domain activity.

D

Dead Link – hperlink that no longer works.

Dedicated Server – server that operates only websites from one owner.

Deep Link – link that posts to a page other than the homepage.

Delicious - one of the largest and most popular social bookmarking sites.

Delisting - a temporary or permanent de-indexing or removal from a directory or search engine.

Demographics - stats and characteristics that define a target audience such as age, gender, race, location.

Digg - social news community with voter popularity to rate articles and content.

Directory - a catalog of website links, usually grouped by topic.

DMOZ - largest human edited open source directory on the web.

Domain Name Server (DNS) – a naming scheme that translates web names to IP addresses

Do Follow – an attribute designed to let search engines know when to follow a link.

Domain - naming scheme to categorize and organize websites. People refer to domain name, for example www.haveanicheday.ca is a top level domain.

Duplicate Content – content that can be found on another webpage or site, not unique.

E

eBooks -  a book written and delivered in electronic format.

Editor - program designed to edit text such as notepad or the more robust MS Word.

Ethical - the practice of following rules and guidelines in order not to deceive or manipulate.

Exact Match – keyword search that targets the search engine for an “exact return” of the phrase in order. For example if you looked for web design you would not get result for “web designers” or website design.

External Link – web link that goes to another website.

EzineArticles -  largest article directory.

F

Favicon - a small icon or graphic that appears next to an URL in a browser – used for branding.

Feed - a method of subscription to content. A feed reader is designed to receive content.

Firefox - popular open source web browser.

Firewall - a security barrier to keep people and virus from reaching important computer files.

Flash - program for designing animation.

Flickr - popular photo sharing community.

Flippa (formerly Sitepoint) – the top website to buy and sell domain names.

Forms - page on a site designed to accept text information for capture or subscription.

Forums - community of members for online discussion and chat, usually for a specific interest or topic.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) – application to transfer content from one computer to another.

Freelance - a person who works for himself and contracts services to other parties.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) – common abbreviation or term for an area on the website that answers the most common questions pertinent to your topic or product.

G

Geo Targeting – aiming to reach a group of people by specific location.

Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) – graphic format for an image file that can be used in almost any browser or document.

Google - World leader in search engine marketing and data analysis.

Google Bot – the spider bot run by Google that searches and indexes web sites for content.

Google Dance – a term referred to the movement of a web page in the ranking system of Google.

Google Supplemental Index – a secondary index of websites that comprise of new or less trusted sites, often those with duplicate content.

Google Trends – a tool that offers search data of the history and activity on key terms and sites.

Google Webmaster Tools – a resource for webmasters to help with the searching and indexing of a website.

Graphic - a file that is an image or drawing.

H

Hacker - a computer user that pushes a system or software to it’s maximum capacity thus optimizing the use.

Heading - an attribute that defines a subject for an article.

Headline - a summary of an article for purpose of quick reference.

Hidden Text – text in a web browser that search engines can see but the human eye can’t.

Hit - a request from a server to a page. This is a common benchmark to see the number of visitors a page gets.

Home Page – the main page or index page for a website – root.

Hoplink - a  link that incorporates user information into the URL to gather data, typically for payment from an affiliate site.

Host - the computer or server where you put your files. A host company is used to manage your domain and bandwidth.

Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) – the main language used to read the code on a webpage.

HTML Editor – an application that allows you to change and write text files in HTML.

HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) – the means by which data is transferred between one location to another.

HTTPS - secure HTTP, where the data is protected from outside sources.

Hub - a site of authority that link to many sites, usually on a specific topic.

Hyperlink - also known as a connection that takes you to another web page.

.htaccess – a server file that helps you protect or redirect files in your directory or host.

I

Internet Service Provider (ISP) – the company that offers internet service to home and business users.

ICANN -  Internet Corporations of Assigned Names & Numbers is the body that overlooks and regulates the technical management of the internet for the US.

IP Address – every system connected to the Internet has a unique identification with a series of numbers consisting of 4 sections (1.2.3.4) with numbers from 0 to 255.

Index - a database of the search engine directory, references all the pages.

Internet Marketing (IM) – marketing websites through the internet to make money or attract “customers” of any kind.

Instant Messaging (IM) – form of real time communication between two or more people in the form of text chat.

Internal Link (inbound) – a link coming into a website from and external site.

Images - a visual representation or file, such as a photo or graphic.

Impression - a request to load a page from a website, also known as page view or page impression.

Internet Explorer -  a web browser by Microsoft used to read web pages.

Information Products – products designed to offer information, usually electronic forms of books or software tools and memberships.

J

JPEG - form of graphical file, especially good for photo images.

Java - programming language by Sun that helps with enhanced animation.

Javascript -  a language that helps add dynamic features to websites.

K

Keyword - a word or phrase used to focus an online search.

Keyword Matching – the different methods of choosing and finding information through a keyword search.

  • Keyword Broad Match – the default, searches for all the words used in any order
  • Keyword Exact Match – will return variations that have the words in them
  • Keyword Phrase Match – must return the exact phrase by the letter
  • Keyword Negative Match – a phrase minus all instances that include a certain word, say the color  -green. All phrases with the term green will be removed.

Keyword Research – the process and methods used to discover keywords for gaining targeted traffic.

Keyword Marketing – the process to promote and sell online by defining key terms that the search engines and consumers are looking for.

Keyword Tool – a tool that helps you discover and manipulate keywords. You can also review search volumes and data pertaining to the keyword.

Keyword Density – the number of times a keyword phrase appears on a web page.

L

Landing Page – the page that a visitor arrives at after clicking on a link or advertisement.

Link Bait – creating or promoting information to invoke other websites to link to your site.

Link Churn – the rate at which a web page loses or changes links.

Link Farm – a group of websites by different owners that link to each other to create authority, this is something that is against the search engine terms of service.

Link Reputation – how closely the content on a web page matches the anchor text on an external link.

List Server – program that automatically sends information in the form of news to a list of emails.

Login - an identification name and password used to gain access to a web page or site.

Link (hyperlink) – a connection that takes you to another web page.

Link Directory (see directory) – a catalog of website links, usually grouped by topic.

List Building – a method of building a subscriber base of users that visit your website in order to contact them via email and be able to sell or connect with them.

Long Tail Keyword Phrase – refers to the vast number of low volume search terms related to a larger high volume word.

Mailing  list – a list gathered from list building to send users emails with information and offers.

Meta Tag – attribute in the markup of a page, used to describe aspects of the contents

Metrics – a measurement of a website to analyze the performance of certain data and activities.

Optimize - to maximize for efficiency, such as a website for traffic.

Optin (email Optin) – subscription based promotion that gives a user the option to subscribe or unsubscribe to receive information or a product.

Organic Search – unpaid search results that rank in order on the page by relevancy and quality.

Outsource - delegating tasks for money to other people.

Page (same as webpage) – a single document found on the web, usually consisting of many to make up a website.

Page View (also impression) – a request to load a page from a website, also known as page impression.

Page Rank – a scale or rank system of all the webpages between 0 and 10 that determines the authority of the site, with 10 being the strongest.

Paid Inclusion – a method that allows a website to pay to be included in a directory and bypass the standards and time wait for indexing.

Paypal - a large company owned by eBay that facilitates secure payment and transfer of funds for goods and services received.

Pay Per Click (PPC) – a pricing model to sell advertisement in which the buyer pays per click received.

Penalty - is when the search engines ban or remove a website for not following the guidelines.

PHP - an open source script that interacts with the server to make a webpage interactive.

Ping - a function to find out if a web page is active. Pinging a blog directory or index tells them that you have updated content to be shared.

Private Label Rights (PLR) – content that can be edited, changed and used as the buyer/receiver desires within the terms of the publisher.

Plug-in – an application that is installed to enhance a program, usually a browser and add special functionality.

Podcast - an audio broadcast over the computer to mobile devices and computers.

Point of Presence (POP) – usually the location in which a telecommunication carrier allows access to the service. Often used to connect email or messaging.

Portable Document Format (PDF) – a universal file format by Adobe that allows files to be distributed and viewed by everyone.

Portal - website offering a common point of information, news and tools.

Protocol - a set of rules that governs how information is shared.

Query - the actual request for information to a search engine or database.

Reach - number of unique visitors to a website over a period of time.

Real Simply Syndication (RSS) – a method of distributing information through a feed.

Redirect - a method of telling search engines a web page has moved and redirecting them to another location.

Referrer - the source where a web visitor came from.

Registrar - a company where you register domain names.

Registration - the process of signing up for something.

Reseller Account – a type of hosting account that lets you sell domains and have a separate cPanel for each account, thus being more secure.

Reciprocal Links – where people try to exchange links to build authority.

Robot - a file that sits in the index and tells the search engine which pages of a site to crawl or index.

Screen Name – a name used to represent yourself in an online community such as a forum or social media membership site.

Search Advertising – when an advertiser pays for the opportunity for a user to go to their website when a user types in a keyword.

Search Engine – a tool used to find and index information.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) – promoting a website for the search engines to find and index easily.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – optimizing a website to rank well with the search engines.

Search Engine Results Page (SERP) – the location or number that your web page shows up in a search result.

Search Terms – the word or text typed into a search engine to gather results.

SEO Toolbook – an authority on Search Engine Optimization with tools, courses, services and information.

Server - computer used to host files and show them on the web.

Shareware - programs and application software, often open source or free that are readily available and can usually be downloaded online.

Sitepoint (now called Flippa) – the top place to buy and sell domain names.

Site Flipping – the practice of creating sites for the purpose of selling them.

Site Map – page created to help index your site for the search engines.

Site Traffic – the amount of visitors to your site.

Skype - a popular free online voice communication system using voice over internet protocol (VOIP) technology.

Social Media – sites that are based on membership and users sharing content and ideas in various formats.

SPAM - unsolicited emails or comments on websites.

Spider - a term used for the search engines that spider the web searching for sites to index.

Splash Page – a landing page that you arrive on when you first visit a website, sometimes in the form of sales copy.

Split Testing (A/B Testing) – creating two ads, web pages or banners to see which one performs better.

Spyfu - a keyword search site to discover the values of clicks and traffic.

Spyware - software designed to spy on websites and gather information.

Squeeze Page – a landing page designed to funnel or squeeze someone into subscribing or ordering something.

Stickiness - how effective a page or site is at retaining visitors.

Stop Words – common words that don’t count to the search engines such as (at, to, and, is)

Stumbleupon - a popular social media site that shares bookmarks on popular articles.

Submission - content added or offered to a directory or search engine to be listed or indexed.

Subscriber List – the users that have submitted their details to your optin for you to send information and product to.

Tags (meta) – attribute in the markup of a page, used to describe aspects of the contents.

Targeted Marketing – promotion aimed at attracting a specific type of audience.

Technorati - popular social media search engine that lists popular articles, especially technical ones.

Templates - a file that is created to use as a standard with common areas to set up other files.

Testimonial - a statement of endorsement.

Themes - a template designed to have a certain look or feel.

Throughput - amount of data transferred through your internet connection.

Title - information used to describe the content in the page or document, usually seen on the blue area at the top of the browser.

Toolbar - a navigation panel on a browser used to perform various actions and functions.

Trackback - notification that another website has mentioned your website.

Traffic - the amount of visitors to your site.

Traffic Building – the act of gaining more visitors to your site.

Trends - general direction and popular interests of the market/consumers.

Tutorials - a method of training through a lesson plan.

Unique Selling Point (USP) – the part of your business that sets you apart from all your competitors. What do you do differently or better?

Upload - the act of sending one file from one computer to another.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL) – the unique address of a web document.

Usability - the ability for users to navigate and function on your website with ease.

Vertical Search – a search or search engine that indexes by location, topic or something that groups the sites together.

Video - a format of watching live action or movies.

Web Crawler – a search engine that searches other search engines to provide a listing or index of the results.

Web Media -the different methods of viewing information such as video, images, animation. It changes and grows as technology improves.

Web Page – a single document found on the web, usually consisting of many to make up a website.

Webmaster - an individual that manages, builds and administers a website.

Whitehat - a technique to promote a website that use ethical methods as defined by the search engine terms of service.

Whois - a record of domain name ownership and data.

Widget - a tool that allows a live update of information on a web page.

Wiki - application that allows a community to create and edit a website that shares information.

Wikipedia - the largest free online and collaborative encyclopedia, where users edit and share information, correcting and appending along the way.

WordPress - the largest and most popular open source blogging platform. Very flexible and highly supported with plugins, widgets, tutorials and support.

Wordtracker - popular keyword research tool.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) – a simple, flexible markup language to format feeds and syndications.

Yahoo - large search engine and Internet portal in competition with Google.

YouTube - site to find, share and view uploaded and organized videos and movies.

Zine - magazines that are published digitally or online.
